Brand new carpet. You take a nap on the floor in a pile of soft, polyester fibers. It’s a neutral-color, frieze carpet and you roll over happy that you opted for new padding during the installation. The contractor highly recommended it, but you only supposed it was so he could charge you for the double installation. I can tell you though, my friend, that your contractor was not trying to cheat you.
Most people forget that there is so much more to carpet than meets the eye and in fact, the majority is below the carpet itself. It’s true that carpet padding makes your flooring soft, but did you know that it also absorbs sound, traps heat and makes vacuuming easy?
It absorbs sound
Hardwood hallways remind me of old empty mansions that echo with each step. They’re cold and lonely and make it impossible to sneak up on your little brother. Carpet is so much quieter, but how?
The padding beneath your carpet not only gives you something soft to walk on, but it also absorbs the sound of your footsteps. Normally these sounds would echo off the hard cement or wood sub flooring beneath; but instead, padding does a good job at absorbing this sound because it is soft and porous.
A warm, toasty house
Remember how we talked about empty mansions being cold? Your carpet flooring would be cold too if there was no padding beneath it. Not only does carpet padding absorb sound, but it also keeps in heat. It’s normal for cold air to make its way into the foundation of your home, but carpet padding stops that air from coming through the carpet and chilling up your living room.
The benefits of carpet padding do not stop at blocking cold air and absorbing sound, it is also a useful tool for more thoroughly cleaning the floor. Vacuums work by creating a suction that picks up dirt and dust in the carpet. The padding makes it easier for the vacuum cleaner to not only pick up the dust in the carpet, but the dust underneath it too. By acting as a barrier between the sub flooring and carpet, the padding allows the vacuum to pick up the carpet layer and reach the dirt beneath.
A longer life
You will be happy to know that your contractor’s advice was also the key to extending the life of your carpet. Not all padding is the same, which means that each type of carpet requires a different type. Installing the wrong padding can cause your carpet to go flat faster than expected. The right padding will keep it fluffy and new for the extent of its warranty.
The right choice
If your contractor had not recommended you change your carpet padding with the new carpet installation, you would be missing out on the benefits of household sound quality, warmth and cleanliness, not to mention the expected lifetime of your carpet. Remember, carpet padding may not be the first thing you see in your flooring, but it is definitely one of the most important.
