Choosing The Right Marble For Your Flooring Project

When it comes to a home redesign, choosing the type of floor can be one of the hardest decisions you will ever make simply because there are so many great options available. For the highest level of luxury, choosing to install marble floors in your kitchen, bathroom, and other areas of your home should be at the top of the list-marble floors are durable, beautiful, easy to maintain, and add a touch of luxury that no other material can match. When it comes to choosing the right marble for your flooring project, here are a few things you should watch out for:

Make sure it is real marble flooring.

With marble flooring being a stable in any high-end luxury home, it’s easy to understand why nearly every flooring retailer in the market today stocks marble in some form. Unfortunately, though, some of these retailers attempt to pass off fake marble on unknowing customers. Real marble is limestone that has undergone change due to pressure and heat from being underground for a long period of time and this natural process is what makes marble so exquisite and unique.

Some retailers, though, try to pass off manmade marble or even painted tiles to cut production costs and make more profit. To make sure the marble you are purchasing is the real thing, you could perform a simple test at home-ask for a sample piece of tile from your chosen retailer and pour vinegar (or better yet, muriatic acid from a hardware store) on the tile. If bubbles aren’t formed, it’s most likely a fake.

Expect differences in marble.

When you purchase real marble, you are most likely going to be looking at one single tile or a single slab. It’s important to understand, though, that because real marble is created naturally underground that every tile you purchase will have some sort of color variant that could be a few shades lighter or darker than the tile you based your purchase off of. Due to the fact that marble can vary slightly in color, texture, and overall appearance, it’s important to view samples with a very open mind. When you get a sample, you can get a general idea of what the weight, thickness, and durability of the stone may be but aesthetics will vary from your sample and what you end up with.
